Do you remember the last time a stranger paid you an honest compliment? Did it surprise you? How did it make you feel?
For some reason, compliments from strangers can hold a lot of weight and make a huge impact. Even more so than compliments that come from the people we love and know well.
I’ve been going gray for the last two years. I have long hair, and I chose to grow out my gray without chopping it all off. The process has been awkward and ugly. But it’s something I really want to do. Because my hair is so weird-looking right now, I never feel really good about the way my hair looks.
Last week I took my sons to a birthday party at one of those crazy play places where kids are running around, squealing, and having a great time. I was chasing my boys around, when a lady came up to me and told me that she loved my hair.
I couldn’t believe it.
Then she told me that she was growing out her gray too, and wished her hair looked like mine. She showed me her gray streak, which was very pretty.
Her compliment put me on cloud nine for the rest of the day. I couldn’t believe that someone actually liked my hair! And was nice enough to tell me about it, and let me know that she was going gray too.
That made me think about how a compliment from a stranger might help someone who is truly struggling. If one little compliment from a stranger can help someone like me, what could it do for someone who is really lonely, someone with very low self-esteem, or someone who is completely overwhelmed?
Since then, I’ve tried to pay compliments to people that might not get noticed as much. I’m not sure if it’s making a big impact or not, but if I can make someone feel even a little bit as happy as I did, it’s worth it!
What’s the best compliment you ever received?
